placeMarkers

June 5, 2013 - 03:10

This addon is used for saving and searching specific text strings or bookmarks. It can be used  on web pages or documents in NVDA's browse mode. It can also be used for saving or searching strings of text in multi-line controls; in this case, if it's not possible to update the caret, the corresponding string will be copied to the clipboard, so that it can be searched using other tools. The plugin saves the specified strings and bookmarks to files whose name is based on the title and URL of the current document. This addon is based on SpecificSearch and Bookmark&Search, developed by the same author. You should uninstall them to use this one, since they have common keystrokes and features.

Key Commands:
  • control+shift+NVDA+f: Opens a dialog with an edit box that shows the last saved search; in this dialog you can also select the previously saved searches from a combo box or remove the selected string from the history using a checkbox. You can choose if the text contained in the edit box will be added to the history of your saved texts. Finally, choose an action from the next group of radio buttons (between Search next, Search previous or Don't search), and specify if NVDA will make a case sensitive search. When you press okay, NVDA will search for this string.
  • control+shift+NVDA+k: Saves the current position as a bookmark. If you want to provide a name for this bookmark, select some text from this position before saving it.
  • control+shift+NVDA+delete: Deletes the bookmark corresponding to this position.
  • NVDA+k: Moves to the next bookmark.
  • shift+NVDA+k: Moves to the previous bookmark.
  • Not assigned: Shows the file name where the place markers data will be saved in browse mode, without an extension.
  • alt+NVDA+k: Opens a dialog with the bookmarks saved for this document. You can write a note for each bookmark; press Save note to save changes. Pressing Delete you can remove the selected bookmark. Pressing OK you can move to the selected position.
  • Not assigned: Saves a position as a temporary bookmark.
  • Not assigned: Moves to the temporary bookmark for the current document.
  • Not assigned: Finds the next occurrence of the last text searched for any specific document.
  • Not assigned: Finds the previous occurrence of the last text searched for any specific document.
Place markers Submenu (NVDA+N)

Using the Place markers submenu under NVDA's Preferences menu, you can access:

  • Specific search folder: opens a folder of specific searches previously saved.
  • Bookmarks folder: Opens a folder of the saved bookmarks.
  • Copy placeMarkers folder: You can save a copy of the bookmarks folder.
  • Restore placeMarkers: You can restore your bookmarks from a previously saved placeMarkers folder.

Note: The bookmark position is based on the number of characters; and therefore in dynamic pages it is better to use the specific search, not bookmarks.

Changes for 18.0
  • The command to see the path for placeMarkers shows if there are permanent bookmarks, text for specific search or a temporary bookmark for the current document.
Changes for 17.0
  • Fixed a bug which didn't allow to save place markers in some documents.
  • Fixed translated strings making translations to work properly.
Changes for 16.0

  • Skim reading is supported when moving to temporary bookmarks.
  • If needed, you can download other versions.

  • When the Specific search dialog is opened after running the Specific find previous command, the Search previous option will be selected.
Changes for 14.0
  • The command to copy the name of the file where place markers data will be saved has been replaced by a command which shows this file name in browse mode. This is not assigned to a gesture.
  • The "Text to search" field does not overlap the "Saved text" field anymore. (Thanks to Cyrille Bougot).
  • Requires NVDA 2019.3 or later.

  • The specific search feature works when the NVDA's About dialog is open.
  • In the Specific search dialog, the case sensitive checkbox will be checked if this option was selected for the last search.
  • When the add-on is updated, bookmarks and strings for specific search saved in the previous version of the add-on will be automatically copied to the new version, unless you prefer to import place markers saved in the main configuration folder of NVDA.
  • When using the dialog to copy place markers, if the chosen folder is not named placeMarkersBackup, a subfolder with this name will be created to prevent the deletion of directories containing important data, such as Documents or Downloads.
Changes for 12.0
  • Fixed a critical bug which caused NVDA to crash when trying to open the Notes dialog, if chinese characters were selected before saving bookmarks.
Changes for 11.0 Changes for 10.0
  • In Edge, gestures associated with bookmarks selection, such as NVDA+k, NVDA+shift+k or NVDA+alt+k, will be sent to the application instead of trying to move the cursor to bookmarks, to avoid errors, especially in long documents.
  • Now specific search is supported in Edge.

  • The visual presentation of the dialogs has been enhanced, adhering to the appearance of the dialogs shown in NVDA.
  • Performing a Find Next or Find Previous command in Browse Mode will now correctly do a case sensitive search if the original Find was case sensitive.
  • Requires NVDA 2016.4 or later.
  • Now you can assign gestures to open the Copy and Restore place markers dialogs.

UnicodeBrailleInput

March 3, 2013 - 18:53
  • Authors: Mesar Hameed, Patrick Zajda, Leonard de Ruijter.
  • download stable version

This add-on allows you to convert text from braille (E.G. 1345-1236-145-1) to Unicode braille characters. You can also convert text according to the currently selected input braille table.

The purpose of this specialized addon is to make it easier to help to improve liblouis tables and to add automatic tests for your language. With the addition of unicode braille table in NVDA 2017.3, this add-on is no longer required for this, as users can choose to input braille with the new table. However, this add-on can still aid in converting normal text to unicode braille according to a particular input table.

Usage
  • Open a unicode aware text editor (for example Notepad++).
  • Press NVDA+Ctrl+U or choose Unicode Braille Input found under NVDA tools menu.
  • Select whether your input consists of braille dots (e.g. 1345-1236-145-1) or normal text according to the current braille table (e.g. Dutch (Netherlands).
  • Type your braille text in numeric form or your normal text, respectively.
  • Press OK.
  • The required unicode characters will be copied to your clipboard ready for you to paste.
Changes for 3.0
  • New maintainer: Leonard de Ruijter.
  • Add-on is compatible with Python 3 and therefore with NVDA 2019.3 and above.
  • Added the ability to create unicode braille from normal text according to the currently selected input braille table.
Changes for 2.0

instantTranslate

January 31, 2013 - 14:50

This add-on is used to translate selected and/or clipboard text from one language to another. This is done using the Google Translate service.

Configuring languages

To configure source, target and in case swap language, go to: NVDA Menu >> Preferences >> Instant Translate Settings.

There are two comboboxes labeled "Source language" and "Target language", and a checkbox to decide if it must copy the translation to clipboard.

In addition, if you selected auto option (the first choice) from "Source language" combobox, there are also a combobox labeled "Language for swapping" and a checkbox about the auto-swap.

The meaning of two first comboboxes and checkbox for copy is clear, but some words about the rest are necessary. Remember always that the explanations below assume the source language set on the auto option.

The "Language for swapping" combobox is useful when you swap via script (see below) the source and target language; in fact, a target language set on the auto option has no sense, so the addon sets it to value of combobox above.

So, imagine this situation: you usually translate into English (your main language), but sometimes (for example, when you write a document) you need to translate into Italian (your second language, suppose); you can set "Language for swapping" combobox to Italian, so you will translate from English to Italian without accessing directly to the addon settings. Obviously this function has a major or minor utility according to your more frequent needs.

Now, the auto-swap checkbox: it appears if and only if you set the auto option in "Source language" combobox, and is directly connected with "Language for swapping" combobox. If you activate it, then the addon tries to commute automatically from your source and target configuration to a configuration where target becomes the source language, and language selected in "Language for swapping" combobox is the new target language; extremely useful if the source language of the text you want translate is the target language.

A simple example: take again in mind the situation imagined previously; if you translate a text in a language different from English, there is no problem, you get the correct translation in English. But if you need to translate a text from English, normally you get a translation into English identical to original text, and this is a bit useless. Thanks to auto-swap function, however, assuming that you want to know how your text sounds into Italian, the addon commutes automatically the target language to Italian, so it returns a valid translation.

Anyway, this is a temporary configuration; if this option has no effect (it's experimental), try to commute manually to a stable configuration, using the gesture for swapping described below. It's experimental because in some situations (with short texts, typically), Google does not recognize the real source language correctly, and you have to swap languages manually via script, so to force the source language to be the previous target language (English in our example).

At least, in the speech settings parameters dialog (NVDA Menu >> Preferences >> Speech), you may want to check the "Automatic language switching (when supported)" option. This way, if you are using a multi-lingual synthesizer, the translation will be announced using the target language voice of the synthesizer.

Using

You can use this add-on in three ways:

  1. Select some text using selection commands (shift with arrow keys, for example) and press associated key to translate. translation result will be read with synthesizer which you are using.
  2. You can also translate text from the Clipboard.
  3. Press the dedicated shortcut key to translate the last spoken text.
Shortcuts

All following commands must be pressed after modifier key "NVDA+Shift+t":

  • T: Translate selected text,
  • Shift+t: translate text from the Clipboard,
  • S: swap source and target languages,
  • A: announce current configuration,

This add-on allows you to read and activate icons on the system tray or the task bar, within a list box, for easy access and interaction to those items. With the add-on installed, press NVDA+f11 once for this dialog to pop-up with system tray elements, and press twice to display task bar elements, which are the currently running applications.

Note that you can access the windows system tray in any screen reader software using the Windows+B, and the task bar by pressing Windows+T. This plugin is only useful to make the transition from JAWS for Windows smoother and to avoid some tooltips that may pop-up when cycling through the system tray with the windows keyboard means.
